Happiness may feel out of reach at times, but experts say small daily choices can make a real difference.
Psychiatrist Elissa Epel suggests that simple, consistent habits can help boost mood and build long-term well-being.
“We have more control [over our happiness] than we think. We can take the reins and discover what we can do now—small things that can boost feelings of joy or contentment, ” Epel explains.
Epel also highlights the power of “micro-habits”, which are small, intentional actions that activate the brain's reward system.
Acts of kindness, finding humor in everyday moments, and spending time outdoors can all help reduce stress and increase positive emotions.
Reflecting on personal values and practicing gratitude can also create a stronger sense of purpose.
“Make a list of things you are grateful for, small and large,” Epel says, noting that gratitude can help set a more positive tone for the day.
Other habits, like letting go of anger with compassion and taking breaks from digital distractions, can further support emotional balance.
Over time, these small shifts can add up, helping reshape how we think, feel, and experience everyday life.
